About Upper Montgomery Joint Authority

The Upper Montgomery Joint Authority (UMJA) owns and operates a 2.0 million gallon-per-day wastewater treatment facility and regional collection system serving East Greenville, Pennsburg, Red Hill, and portions of Upper Hanover Township. Our system includes more than 40 miles of sewer infrastructure, nearly 840 manholes, and critical facilities that safely collect, transport, and treat wastewater from over 10,000 residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations.

Every day, our dedicated team of certified operators, maintenance personnel, laboratory staff, and administrative professionals work to protect public health and the environment. Through continuous monitoring, preventative maintenance, and responsible treatment practices, we ensure that wastewater is safely processed and returned to the environment while meeting strict state and federal regulations.

Investing in Our Community's Future

Over the past decade, UMJA has undertaken one of the most significant infrastructure improvement programs in its history. Following extensive studies that identified excessive inflow and infiltration (I&I) entering the sewer system during wet weather events, UMJA launched a comprehensive rehabilitation effort that included flow monitoring, sewer and lateral inspections, manhole rehabilitation, mainline and lateral lining, smoke testing, and collection system improvements.

These efforts, combined with a $28 million wastewater treatment plant upgrade completed in 2021, transformed the way wastewater is treated in our community. The project replaced aging equipment with modern screening facilities, upgraded pumping systems, advanced biological nutrient removal treatment processes, tertiary filtration systems, and improved clarification facilities. As a result, average and peak wet-weather flows have been significantly reduced, system reliability has improved, and the Authority is better positioned to serve future generations.

Continuing to Evolve

Today, UMJA continues to invest in sustainable and forward-thinking solutions. Current initiatives include a biosolids management upgrade designed to improve efficiency and long-term reliability, as well as a 1.6 MW solar energy project that will help reduce operating costs and provide millions of dollars in projected savings over the coming decades.

Our mission extends beyond wastewater treatment. We are committed to environmental protection, infrastructure stewardship, community education, and responsible planning that supports the health, safety, and quality of life of everyone we serve.
